How many times a week should I practice Pilates?

joannaboyes1

I am often asked this question and there is no one fixed answer as it depends on your body and your goals.

Its an important question worth considering but ask yourself what is it you want to gain from practicing Pilates. With a busy lifestyle it can be hard to put time aside for more than once a week, it depends on your level of commitment and how much you want to get out of Pilates.

Pilates was designed as a full body workout and amazing results and body transformations can be achieved and it is also extremely good for rehabilitation. How far do you want to take it? Do You want to reach advanced level? Intermediate? Or are you looking to gain some core strength and get rid of those aches and pains and niggles and stay at maintaining that.

Just once a week, likely benefits are:

  • Increased flexibility

  • increased core strength

  • increase muscle tone

  • improve balance

  • decrease muscle imbalance

  • improve posture

  • decrease general body aches and pains

Upping the frequency of your Pilates Practice will without a doubt bring more benefits, twice a week expect:

  • improvement on all of the benefits mentioned above

  • further increase flexibility, strength, posture,

  • fully learn and master the beginner exercises

  • progress onto more challenging versions of the same exercises

  • have better control and stability in the exercises

  • Improve stamina

  • build upon what you already have learnt and already gained physically

  • and make better connections in the body.

Pilates three times per week:

  • increasing all of the above

  • learn new intermediate exercises and increase your strength to be able to perform them with the correct technique and stability.

  • faster results in strength and increased muscle tone

  • gain a strong core and as a result a stronger body to be able to cope with with physical demands of life.

  • Increase fitness and stamina

  • move more easily and smoothly

Pilates x 4 /5 per week:

Like anything in life the more you do it, the better you are at doing it.

  • Learn how to practice and perform advanced exercises

  • increase not just core but upper and lower body strength.

  • improved lung capacity

  • improved proprioception

  • improved flexibility

  • stronger spine

  • improved fitness

  • stronger joints

  • improved mental health

Should I have Private sessions?

One to One sessions

These sessions usually last for one hour but can be as long as 90 minutes depending on the goals and the body. One to One sessions are all about you, the whole session is tailored to your physical needs and your goals. First off, you may be stuck on an exercise in class that you just can't master and It may be for rehabilitation reasons, you may need to build strength in a particular area.

One to one sessions are about you working towards your goal. Private sessions will also help you get your diet and nutrition on track and help you with weight loss or gain or maintenance or just eating a healthier more balanced nutrient rich diet. Some people like to do both a regular class and a regular one to one to help them to improve and progress more quickly.

Will I lose weight by practicing more Pilates?

Pilates isn't a cardio workout so you wont burn a ton of calories like you would on a long run or a long walk for example but you can expect to burn a couple of hundred calories in an hours session depending on how hard you work.

Will I build muscle?

Pilates aims to lengthen and strengthen the body and core and promotes and teaches good posture. Attending Pilates regularly more than once a week will improve muscle tone and shape in your body ,help flatten the abdominals and create a long toned lean body combined of course with a healthy eating plan suited to your lifestyle and activities.
