About Yin Yoga
Yin is the opposite to Yang. Yang is fast paced and concentrates on the muscles. Yin Yoga is unlike any other variety of Yoga or exercise that is fast paced with fancy moves. Yin Yoga stretches the connective tissue, the fascia, ligaments and joints. It is everything that yang isn't.
Yin Yoga is slow paced incorporating the traditional Chinese medicine, with a sequence of poses that that are held from anything from 3 minutes as a beginner and up to 5 minutes for more the more experienced Yogi, but can be held up to 20 minutes for the very experienced Yogi.

Yin Yoga is meditative and slow paced which is what makes this practice so magical as it gives you a chance to look inward and really tune into your body and allow train your mind to focus on the sensations of the body.
Yin gives you the time to lengthen and stretches the tissues that are barely touched. When we stretch at the end of a more yang type of exercise we are just getting to the superficial muscles that are close to the surface. But with Yin we are holding the poses for longer and in addition to the stretch we focus on breathing and staying with your thoughts instead of chatting or allowing the mind to drift.

Who is it Suitable for?
Yin is great for anyone with an active lifestlye. If you run, lift weights, do more fast pace style of Yoga or Pilates or you ride a bike, row, then yin Yoga is perfect for releasing the knots and kinks that build up in the tissue and a wonderful way to counterbalance all of that both physically and mentally.

Yin is very restorative and many of the poses can be adapted to suit each individual body. Yin teaches us to become more in tune with our bodies and the healing benefits of practicing Yin Yoga I personally have found to be unlike anything else i have tried before.

My Yin Story
Before I became a Pilates teacher I suffered from chronic back pain, I couldn't do any of the things I can do now. Strong Pilates exercises, lift heavy weights, do heavy duty gardening! If I ever attempted any of the above my back would suffer for months at a time. So Pilates has been my saviour in creating a strong core and has definitely improved my flexibility to a certain point.
It wasn't until I began practicing Yin Yoga on a regular basis that I realised I could make any further improvements in my flexibility and also my mind.
After my first lesson I felt relaxed for at least 24 hours afterwards. I fell in love with this ancient practice and practiced it regualry before deciding to learn to become a Yoga Instructor. I found some of the poses to feel quite intense in a deep stretch/massage kind of a way not in a painful way and I loved it. What I didn't expect was to continue to make more and more improvements My lower back is much more flexible it has helped heal and restore my left shoulder and elbow which I injured earlier this year.

Yin Yoga is the perfect balance to Power Pilates (Strong intense Pilates) Weight lifting, Power Yoga, running, hiit,
or anything Yang. Its more than just exercise or just the poses or increasing flexibility, it can if you're open to it change your whole mindset. I now have a great balance of Yin and Yang, Pilates is wonderful, and I will never give up teaching or Practicing but to get deeper into the connective tissues as well as having the strength in the core that Pilates provides is the perfect combination , Too much flexibility (Yin) and the body will become floppy and the joints will have no strength in them. Too much strength and the body and the joints become stiff and will break easily.

In a nut shell Yin Yoga is for everyone and the relationship you have with your body is like any other relationship, you have to feed it and spend time looking after it, if you neglect parts of your body it will neglect you if you look after your body it will look after you.
